What is a cover letter? Cover letter is a letter of introduction attached to or accompanying another document usually a résumé or a curriculum vitae. If I can put it as an analogy, a cover letter is the train engine, and the CV is the carriage behind it. The engine is the one pulling the whole document together because the main purpose of a cover letter is to attract interest of the company employer in reading your resume.

So, ok, why do I need a cover letter to apply for a job offer? It's because they don't know who you are. Why should they care if they don't know you? They need to know who you are. If you just send a name with a CV attached, it doesn't tell your whole story. Why did you apply, what interests you in their company, and what can you bring to the table for them if they hire you.

So while a standard cover letter writing is perfectly fine, it probably won't convince the company employer that you're the right man or woman for the job offered, therefore, it is imperative that you make your cover letter stand out from the crowd.

Ok, now with the explanation out of the way. I'm going to write an example of a cover letter excluding the CV, and then after that I'm going show the letter again but with each section highlighted.

Please note that the following letter is fictional, any resemblance to actual person, location, number and email are coincidental. I am not responsible for any intended use of this letter outside as an example.

Vox Media, Inc.

2315 SE 11th Ave,

Portland, OR 97214 USA

Dear Ms. Fong

I am a freelance photojournalist, I like to take pictures and occasional videos to capture the moment. A good photo is not just a photo, it's a story frozen in time. And when I saw a job opening for a full time photojournalist for Vox in the Vox job listing website, my eyes gleamed, I knew I had to apply.

As a brief overview, I have had extensive knowledge and experience in operating camera gear in my 7 years of freelance photojournalism. I shoot with my own equipment and gears, but sometimes clients have different requirements for their photos and videos, therefore I also rented other equipment to aid me in fulfilling the clients' needs. Doing so, I also gained knowledge and experience on other camera gears. I'm able to adapt to varied shooting conditions to not only take a photo or video but to capture the story. Therefore I'm able to work in various conditions, indoors or outdoors, and as such I believe I could easily fit into your team of photojournalists.

I am a hardworking person and I pay meticulous attention to detail, because I strive not for perfection but for a good story. As I previously said, I'm able to adapt, therefore I am flexible and am willing to learn more from others. I have a lot of passion and enthusiasm for what I do. I'm very keen to work for a company with such a great reputation in independent journalism like your company.

I would love a chance to discuss my CV and my previous works with you. If you would contact me to arrange a meeting, I can be reached at (021)-420-36569 or by emailing me at toasterman217@gmail.com.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, and I very much look forward to hearing back from you in the near future.

Sincerely Yours,

Deva R. Dhanadi
